Cleaning up dirty gold mining must be more than just a PR exercise
Sir, "Gold Miners begin talks on green code" (June 28) presented a one-sided view of the discussions between mining companies such as Newmont and non-governmental organisations such as Oxfam America and Earthworks, partners in the No Dirty Gold campaign. It also completely ignored the role of the jewellery retail industry, which accounts for 80 per cent of gold consumption...Cleaning up dirty gold mining cannot just be a public relations exercise. It has to be about making concrete, on-the-ground changes in the way that this metal is produced - changes that make a tangible difference to communities and ecosystems affected by mining.
