Indonesia Wants to Settle Newmont Suit

Indonesia will not appeal a ruling that forced it drop a civil case against the local subsidiary of the world's largest gold mining company, and hopes instead to reach an out-of-court settlement, the environment minister said Saturday. The decision will not affect an ongoing criminal trial of the company's top local executive, American Richard Ness, on charges stemming from alleged pollution at a mine on Sulawesi Island. Environment Minister Rachmat Witoelar said...[the] settlement with Newmont Mining Corp.'s local subsidiary...would benefit villagers who lived near the now-shuttered mine on Buyat Bay.
