Laos looks set to forge ahead with building its controversial Don Sahong hydropower dam project on the Mekong River, despite having agreed to submit the project to the scrutiny of its regional neighbours…[The] vice chairman of Energy and Mines said Laos has decided to shift from “Notification” to Prior Consultation, the process for which is more complicated and takes longer, to show its commitment to developing the dam in a responsible and sustainable manner…[D]onors and international agencies have expressed concern about the transboundary impact on the environment and the ecological system of hydropower dam project on the mainstream Mekong River, including Don Sahong and Xayaburi, saying that studies on the dam impacts are needed to maintain sustainable development along the Mekong Region…
