FIDH (International Federation for Human Rights)

[PDF] Position paper: Comments to the Interim Report of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the Issue of Human Rights and Transnational Corporations and other Business Enterprises

In the evolution of international instruments dedicated to corporations and human rights, therefore, the Norms represent a promising step toward identifying the substance of respectively States and businesses' human rights responsibilities and suggesting modes of direct accountability. To this end, the FIDH advocates building on this process rather than rejecting it in order to fully comprehend the influence of and eventually impose direct obligations on transnational corporations. In the following, the FIDH: 1) provides historical background on the call for corporate accountability for human rights violations; 2) describes the genesis of the Norms and the mandate of the Special Representative; 3) identifies and analyzes critically the main points of the Special Representative's interim report; and 4) makes recommendations as to the future of the work of the Special Representative.
