Peru Gold Mine, Farmers Reach Accord

Latin America's largest gold mine [Yanacocha, joint venturemajority Newmont Mining & Buenaventura] was poised to restart operations Wednesday following a government-brokered deal with protesting farmers... The farmers had been protesting the Carachugo gold pit..., which uses cyanide and massive amounts of water to extract gold from ore piled on impermeable barriers,...designed to prevent toxins from seeping into the ground... Talks had broken down after a protester was shot and killed during a demonstration at the mine facility earlier this month. The protesters have accused the company of not responding to their concerns that the operation has depleted and contaminated the area's water supply.
