Special Police Forces (OMON) used force against NGO activists trying to prevent felling of the Khimki Forest, wilderness area [Russia]

[Title translation and summary translation of the original Russian language article provided by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre] On 19 April 2011, environmentalists opposing the building of a road in the wilderness area by the construction company “Avtodor” tried to carry out a public monitoring exercise to clarify whether the felling of the Khimki Forest to make way for the road is legal. After they arrived at the site, which was guarded by the private security company “Vityaz” and Special Forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, activists of the NGO “For the Forest near Moscow” and local inhabitants found a tractor-drawn harvester already in use. As they approached, they were arrested by Russian police. Some activists were beaten and literally trodden into the ground. The environmentalists were then taken to the police station where they were subjected to inhuman treatment and not allowed to sit down. [video is included]
