Arbitrary Detention of Members of the Community of Ejido La Sierrita Two Days before Agrarian Court Hearing against Canadian Mining Company Excellon [Mexico]

Two days before the latest hearing in the Ejido La Sierrita´s agrarian court case against the Canadian mining company Excellon Resources Inc., public security officials arbitrarily detained Omar Pacheco, Adolfo Gómez Chareo, Julio Orona, Luis Orona, and Ricardo Calderón, all members of the La Sierrita...community…of ejidatarios…[Two] days previously, Héctor Pacheco…was also detained. All but the last three people named are also affiliated to Local 309 of the National Mining Union…These arbitrary detentions, threats and harassment have taken place in the context of the upcoming court case, due to take place on 12 November in the Sixth Agrarian Tribunal...in the case for the rescission of the land rental contract of 1,100 hectares of land for common use belonging to the ejido La Sierrita…Furthermore, the members of ProDESC have also perceived an increasing climate of harassment and intimidation over the course of the last year…Also, on October 19, the ProDESC offices were raided, for which a criminal report was filed…
