Walmart is giving 500,000 raises, but still not offering a living wage [USA]
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. today announced it plans to give raises to hundreds of thousands of hourly workers...[It] will impose a minimum wage of $9 an hour in April and increase that to $10 an hour by February 2016. The company estimates that will mean raises for 500,000 of its 1.4 million workers...Walmart's decision...puts pressure on other retailers to follow suit — particularly in the notoriously low-paying food preparation service sector. Yet, the move also demonstrates the vast disconnect between retail salaries and the actual cost of living in America.
