Botswana: Aids Activists Speak Against Discrimination

In September, BONELA [Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS] called a special meeting with trade unions and they formed a coalition...They are planning...to submit a petition to Parliament, calling for the enactment of laws to protect workers who are living with HIV/AIDS...The appeal follows a 2002 labour case where Botswana Building Society (BBS) was accused of firing a newly appointed employee because he was HIV positive. Though the Industrial Court had slammed the decision of BBS, the Court of Appeal later ruled in favour of the company. Stegling said that the policy of testing people going for further studies for HIV adopted by companies like Debswana [joint venture De Beers & Botswana Govt.] is bad. Those whose tests come positive do not get scholarships even if they qualify.
