Several people were killed while many others were left with varying degrees of burns and injuries in the district of Nnewi in Anambra State on Christmas eve, 25 December 2015, when a gas tanker exploded at the Inter Corp Oil Limited gas plant, a subsidiary of Nigerian conglomerate Chicason Group. Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producer, deriving the large majority of its export earnings the commodity. Initial reports suggested over 100 people were burnt to death, but subsequent reports including a fact-checking article by a Nigerian newspaper, and the company's own statement, suggested that eight people died.  The total death toll remains unclear.  Media items related to the explosion are below.
