Report calls for new approach to reduce poverty in Nigeria

Wealth from the oil that accounts for more than 95 per cent of Nigeria’s foreign earnings and provides a fifth of America’s gasoline supplies has not reduced pervasive poverty in the oil producing region of Nigeria, a new report by UNDP has said. The Niger Delta Human Development Report...advocates for enhanced livelihoods, improved physical and social infrastructure, equitable distribution of resources, improved local governance, effective conflict management mechanism and better environmental management...the report is an offshoot of a partnership between UNDP and Shell...aimed at strengthening the state of human development in the region.
