Angloplat puts people before profit [So. Africa]

Anglo Platinum (Angloplat [part of Anglo American])...has taken the drastic step of suspending underground operations at its biggest mine, Rustenburg Platinum, for about seven days to address the recent deterioration in safety... [S]pokesman Trevor Raymond...said it was Angloplat’s intention to ensure that employees’ remuneration was not affected. National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) national safety secretary Eric Ncilitshana said NUM’s policy was “people before profits” and it fully supported Angloplat’s decision to suspend operations.
