Myanmar: Another deadly landslide hits Hpakant; jade miners said to be “in overdrive” before new govt. takes office

查看所有標籤

Deadly landslides hit the jade mines in Hpakant, Kachin State in November and December 2015, killing over a hundred. Reports state that most of those killed are hand pickers who go through piles of waste left by large mining firms in search of more gems. It is also reported that mining firms are extracting more aggressively before the new government led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi takes over this year. The increased extraction is said to be leaving thousands more displaced, and exposing hand pickers to more disasters.
