...Edgar Martín Regalado, member of the Collective in Defense of Human Rights and Communal Property of Unión Hidalgo, suffered an attack on the night of 10 February on his way home, when unknown persons fired gunshots.
The defender claimed that this was an attempt to intimidate him to stop fighting against the installation of the Gunaa Sicarú wind farm, located in the region of Juchitán de Zaragoza and operated by the French state-owned company Électricité de France.
...[H]e explained that on that day, he and the civil association Proyecto de Derechos Económicos, Sociales y Culturales (Prodesc) held a press conference in the city of Oaxaca, where they reported on the review process presented before the French court to request the cancellation of the wind project that Électricité intends to impose in Unión Hidalgo....
He lamented that since they began their struggle against the installation of the Gunaa Sicarú wind farm, which will occupy 4,700 hectares of communal land and will be exploited for 30 years, the threats have been constant, as they regularly set fire to the land behind his home.
However, there had never been a threat of this type, so he confirmed that what they are looking for is to scare those who defend the communal lands, they want to demobilise them and in their case to stop informing the inhabitants of Unión Hidalgo of how this project will affect them, but this will not happen, he asserted....
They will also seek the support of the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Peoples of Oaxaca and will ask the federal authorities to reactivate the precautionary measures that he and other activists in the area had, since with this type of acts of intimidation their safety is at risk...
