…[C]ensorship, surveillance, and propaganda remain distressingly effective in many countries, including Iran. And when they involve technology, they sometimes involve charges of corporate complicity…The possibility that Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) [joint-venture between Nokia and Siemens] has played a counterproductive role in Iran has surfaced in recent reports…in contrast to the apparently positive roles played on balance by Twitter, Facebook, You Tube, and cell phones…NSN maintained that the technology merely included “lawful intercept” (wiretap) capabilities…[D]epending on the facts, which remain to be clarified and confirmed, it is open to question whether NSN could have usefully embraced a fuller due diligence process...[also refers to Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Cisco, Intelligence Solutions, Perusa]
