"BHP Billiton, Olympic Dam Corporation – Human Rights Impact Assessment",

Olympic Dam sought a HRIA that built on an assessment conducted in 2009, including determining whether previously identified human rights issues remained relevant. It was viewed as an opportunity to support positive changes in the operation’s relationships with the communities in which it operates, with site staff promoting open, honest and transparent engagement and reporting.

Through the HRIA process, the team found that Olympic Dam has strong policies and procedures in place to manage its social and environmental impacts. The assessment also brought to light a number of areas in which the human rights ‘lens’ could provide additional impetus for addressing opportunities for improvement.
