A Need for Pro-Worker Change: Uganda Ratings 2023

In 2023, Fairwork conducted the first year of research in Uganda among twelve digital location-based platforms. These platforms are in the ride-hailing and food delivery sectors and were rated as per the five Fairwork principles. Although platform work is a fast-growing and important source of livelihood for Uganda’s young population, Fairwork’s research shows that most platforms did not evidence that they had guarantees for fair working conditions for their workers. Out of the twelve platforms, only Glovo scored points this year. All the other eleven platforms did not score any points due to a lack of evidence that they met the principles’ thresholds.

While platforms often prioritise the customer experience, we need to see them enabling fair working conditions for all workers. We invite platforms and stakeholders to engage with us to build a fairer ecosystem for location-based platform workers in Uganda.
