Azerbaijan: CSO calls on BP to speak publicly about arbitrary detention of renowned HRD & use its influence to demand his unconditional release; incl. co. response

Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu, a renowned Azerbaijani economist and human rights defender, was arbitrarily detained on 23 July 2023 and remains in prison on dubious charges. He is reportedly being subjected to inhumane treatment and denied critical medical care. CSOs, academics and governments around the world have condemned these actions and demanded the immediate release of Dr. Ibadoghlu.

Environmental and human rights NGO Crude Accountability issued a letter calling on BP to follow its own commitments and use its influence in Azerbaijan, as the largest corporate foreign investor, to demand the unconditional release of Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu.

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited BP to respond to the letter. The company responded. Its response and the full text of the letter can be found below.
