Colombia: Despite of negative impacts, Govt. says that Chinese investment will help building peace with clean energy

…Colombia is at an exciting crossroads. Its recent steps to put an end to decades of conflict, have coincided with the beginning of the end of the era of fossil fuels.  This shift brings together opportunities, and China may become a key partner in a new era of peaceful and sustainable development for this country…Amongst the countries planning to invest in Colombia, there is China. Li Nianping, Chinese Ambassador to Colombia expressed recently that his country is interested in broadening investments in infrastructure and telecommunications…China has now become the second largest commercial partner of Colombia, after the United States. The largest investments are in agriculture, coal and oil energies (including Energia Esmeralda, owned by Sinochem in the Colombian Amazon) …A report about Chinese investments in Colombia indicates that some of these projects did not meet technical and contractual standards, besides creating environmental and social conflicts.  More recently, in 2015, China also presented a Project to develop an industrial park in Buenaventura…as well as agriculture and road projects in the Orinoquia and Altillanura regions.
