The Australian mining company BHP is on the hook financially for the collapse of a tailings dam that stored mining waste at the Samarco iron ore complex in November 2015, near Mariana, Minas Gerais in Brazil. It has said publicly it wants to reach a final settlement worth potentially tens of billions of dollars of liabilities.
