Thai employers force illegal workers to pay brokers for IDs

Illegal migrants in Thailand are compelled by their employers to shoulder the broker’s fee of up to 10,000 baht (K407,311) in applying for a Certificate of Identity (CI) as well as work and visa permits, Myanmar migrants rights groups in Thailand said.

“Most of our migrants can’t go against their employers because their jobs depend on them, so they will have to shoulder the brokers’ fees,” Ko Shwe Tun Aye, chair of Migrant Workers Network (Phuket), told The Myanmar Times...

He added that migrant workers at the construction sites in Phuket faced salary cuts to pay brokers to work on their documents.

“Most workers won’t go back home after they had registered. They will apply for CIs. So, they always take loans,” Ko Shwe Tun Aye said...
