Work site safety is a grave concern, says HRCM [Maldives]

Employee safety and health at most work sites are neglected, the Human Rights Commission Maldives (HRCM) concludes in its latest report. Under the Employment Act, employers are required to create safe working environments, but the report states that due to the absence of a national set of standards and the lack of enforcement, implementation is at the discretion of employers…The HRCM recommends a set of national standards…be developed in addition to codes of practice to provide guidance on safety and health at work…Bangladeshi High Commissioner Professor Selina Mohsin, said 110 Bangaldeshi labourers died last year from construction-related injuries…[refers to Maldives Association of Construction Industry (MACI)]
