Australia: Australian Maritime Safety Authority detains vessel for mistreatment & underpayment of crew

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has detained a ship - the Unison Jasper - in the Port of Newcastle after crew members from Myanmar complained about mistreatment, fatigue and underpayment of wages. There are also allegations of forced extension of contracts and extended time onboard due to COVID-19.

Business and Human Rights Resource Centre invited vessel owner, Emerald Shipping Company, and management and agency company, Unison Marine Corporation, to respond to the allegations. Emerald Shipping and Unison Marine did not respond.
