France: Report finds vigilance plans of companies in the energy transition are insufficient to address risks in mineral supply chains

French NGO Sherpa released its most recent study of vigilance plans published by companies under the French mandatory human rights due diligence legislation, the Duty of Vigilance law. The study analyzes the content of vigilance plans published by nine French companies that are leaders in the fields of renewable energy, electric mobility and transition minerals extraction. It does so by reference to Sherpa's Vigilance Plans Reference Guide and taking into consideration risks commonly identified in transition minerals' supply chains.

The report finds that vigilance plans often lack content and clarity on risk mapping and due diligence policies with regards to mineral supply chains. Risks associated with transitional minerals are rarely mentioned and the listed measures are often imprecise and detached from the companies’ activities. It includes a set of recommendations for companies, the French government and the European Union to ensure a rights-respecting transition to renewable energy.
