“General Security warns all citizens against employing agricultural laborers below the age of 16 under the penalty law,” the agency said in a statement. The statement comes one day after the Labor Ministry announced the creation of a team to monitor child labor in Lebanon...composed of representatives from the Labor, Social Affairs, Justice and Education ministries, the Internal Security Forces, General Security, activists and civil society groups...it had tasked specific departments with regularly monitoring businesses for “abuse of children and their forced labor in illegal professions.” There are no exact statistics on the number of children working in Lebanon. However, the number is on the rise according to the National Action Plan to Eliminate the Worst Forms of Child Labor...This plan suffered from lack of funding and was due to be reviewed...in light of the influx of over 1 million Syrian refugees since it was drafted. Many refugees arrived in the country without papers or could not afford the fees for permits, making it very difficult to find legal work. This led to more children taking on roles as breadwinners for their families.
