S.Korea: Subcontracted Worker Dies at Hyundai Heavy Industries Shipyard Amid Labour Dispute; Inc. Co., Response

[Unofficial translation provided by the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

"HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Subcontracted Worker Dies… Labour-Management Conflict Escalates”, 14 November 2024

…On 26 October 2024, a subcontracted worker in his 30s collapsed while working at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan shipyard and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

…Regarding the cause of death, the union has raised the possibility of asphyxiation due to inadequate safety measures, while the company attributes it to a personal medical condition.

…In a phone interview with Right Know News, a company representative expressed condolences to the bereaved family, stating, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased. The company is fully cooperating with the authorities’ investigation to ensure no doubts remain and will take all necessary follow-up measures based on the findings.”

… On 30 October, a physical altercation broke out between labour and management over the union’s installation of a protest tent at the Ulsan shipyard. The clash resulted in injuries to over 20 people, including union officials and police officers.

… Regarding this, the company apologised for the “unfortunate incident that occurred during efforts to prevent the union’s illegal activities” but refrained from commenting further on the forced removal of the tent.
