Taiwan: 50 global apparel brands call for responsible recruitment of migrants to textile industry; Govt. responds to joint letter

In September 2024, 50 global apparel brands called for responsible recruitment standards for migrant workers in textile mills.

Their joint letter calls on the government to prohibit recruitment fee charging, to protect migrant workers’ access to unions and workers’ associations, to enable migrant workers to more easily change employers, and to create robust agreements with sending countries that ensure the protection of migrant workers.

Many of which are signatories to the American Apparel & Footwear Association and the Fair Labor Association’s Commitment to Responsible Recruitment.

In September, Focus Taiwan reported that in response to the letter, Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor said it already prohibits recruitment fee charging and that it is continuing to strive for fair migrant worker recruitment. The ministry also recommended sending governments promote direct hiring.
