USA: Amazon faces ‘unprecedented shareholder action’ in favour of improving working conditions
On 25 May 2022, Amazon received a record number of investor resolutions at its annual general meeting, with a number of resolutions addressing the company's working conditions.
Among the 15 shareholder resolutions were proposals on workers' rights, including: a report on freedom of association and collective bargaining; a third-party audit on working conditions; an examination of worker health & safety; and a report on gender and racial pay gaps. Three of the resolutions were presented by warehouse workers.
The vote on freedom of association and collective bargaining, the first of its kind, was marked as 'historic' by UNI Global Union and the International Trade Union Confederation, and resulted in 47% of independent investors voting in favour.
While all investor-led proposals on working conditions and the environment were voted down by shareholders, at the recommendation of Amazon, spectators argue the proposals demonstrate an increase in environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG)-based investing to hold corporations accountable.
