In May 2022, HRW launched the #PayUpFIFA campaign, to support the call of an open letterto FIFA CEO Gianni Infantino signed by a coalition of human rights and football NGOS, and calling on FIFA to establish and contribute to a remedy fund for migrant workers who have suffered abuse in preparation for the World Cup.

The call for remedy was later reportedly endorsed by ex-Finnish captain Tim Sparv.

In August 2022, adidas was the first FIFA sponsor to support the campaign call; their statement can be read in full below.

HRW has called on the French, German and English FAs to support the call publicly; only the German FA responded to our invitation.

AnIndependent study published in August 2022 found no FA has so far endorsed the call and that only four FAs have allowed players to speak with NGOs.
