Human rights defenders raise concerns over Twitter's accounts cleanup plan & its impact on imprisoned activists' rights

Twitter

In May 2023, Elon Musk announced that Twitter plans to delete accounts that have been inactive for more than six months. According to the company, the plan aims to present more accurate, credible information that people can trust. However, human rights defenders and relatives of imprisoned activists noted that the company's plan could negatively impact the freedom of expression of jailed activists by silencing their voices and removing their online presence, which still remains on the social media platform.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Twitter to respond to the allegations. Twitter did not respond.
