In a recent arbitration decision concerning the legitimacy of tobacco packaging legislation, an international tribunal (the World Bank's International Center for Settlement of Investment Dispute) has decided in favour of Uruguay's right to regulate tobacco packaging for the public health and has ordered the claimant, Philip Morris International, to pay $7 million to cover fees and expenses. The company has accepted the decision and said that "they have never tried to question Uruguay's authority to protect public health."
