Mexico: Constellation Brands brewery´s expansion could harm local population's access to water

“U.S. breweries’ water use in Mexico is leaving locals thirsty”, 5 Jul 2016

Are you a beer drinker?...If so, you may be unknowingly contributing to a massive fresh water shortage in the Mexican state of Coahuila…The U.S.-owned Constellation Brands brewery, behind such beers as Negra Modelo and Pacifico, operates out of the municipality of Nava, just 30 miles from the Texas border…Constellation Brands…has plans…so that by 2018 it will be producing 20 million bottles daily…Zargoza Mayor Sanchez finds this expansion deeply troubling. His municipality, at present, has only about 26 gallons of water per second for home and drinking use…Representatives for Constellation Brands…say its water use in Nava has nothing to do with Zargoza’s shortage issues…Northern Mexico is a particularly dry region…Major international corporations aren’t just exploiting water resources from dry Mexican communities. They’re doing it in the United States too…Controversy has erupted around a new water bottling plant being opened by Nestle in Phoenix, Arizona…
