In September 2015, the Akali Tange Association (ATA) submitted a letter to Barrick Niugini, through its Porgera Joint Venture grievance mechanism, alleging that over 250 individuals had been injured, killed, or raped at or in the vicinity of Barrick Niugini’s Porgera Joint Venture mine and seeking remedy under such mechanism.

In June 2016, ATA once again wrote to Barrick Niugini seeking a response to their September 2015 letter, and informing the company of a protest march planned on 24 June.
