India: Two human rights defenders detained in relation to mega hydropower project; incl. company responses

On 12 August 2023, human rights defenders Ebo Mili and Mejo Mihu from Lower Dibang Valley and Dibang Valley in India were detained by Itanagar police while they were protesting the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signing of 13 Mega Hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh. The MoA was supposedly signed with four major central public sector companies - NHPC Limited, Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN), Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDCL) and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO).

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited these companies to respond. NHPC Limited, Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) and Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDCL) responded; their responses are available below. North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) did not respond.
