Amnesty International conducted a review of Lonmin’s social and labour plans and sustainability reports. Following this process, the international NGO concluded that, despite a 2006 commitment from Lonmin to construct 5,500 houses for workers by 2011, the company had only built three by 2012...A call has now been made that the Department of Mineral Resources get a better handle on mining companies’ social and labour plans, with a view to strengthening compliance...Lonmin spokeswoman Sue Vey [in a response to Amnesty International] admitted challenges on the platinum belt were huge and said that the company could not go it alone in tackling social issues...
