Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell will today be forced to confront its past associations with the Nigerian military regime of General Sani Abacha as it is called for cross examination by MOSOP counsel appearing before a panel in Abuja investigating human rights violations under military rule. Shell has been named by MOSOP, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, when it filed over 8,000 petitions which accuse security forces and the company of being responsible for abuses ranging from environmental damage to extra-judicial killings occurring over several decades.
